Session #1: U.S. Taxation of Foreign Investors

This session will focus on foreign investors investing in Private Equity (PE) or Venture Capital (VC) funds and will provide an overview of typical income from these investments that are taxed in the U.S. Magnolia will discuss how the U.S. taxes these types of income receive by foreign investors, including the various types of withholding tax applicable.

Speaker Biography:

Magnolia Mabel Movido, J.D., LL.M., heads the International Tax Practice of Wipfli LLP, a Top 20 U.S. accounting and consulting firm.  Magnolia advises Wipfli’s individual and corporate clients on U.S. international tax implications of their U.S. inbound or outbound transactions.  She also handles complex structuring and tax planning projects.  Magnolia’s prior experience includes managing the global tax compliance and reporting for middle market to Fortune 10 companies, which involved launching businesses into new territories, identifying and mitigating risks for foreign entities, and ensuring compliance with local laws.  She has experience in transfer pricing and working with global teams in more than 150 countries.


Session #2: Global Tax Developments

This session will focus on changes to international tax rules at a multinational level and will provide an overview of tax changes resulting from global efforts conducted by the G7/OECD and unilateral measures affecting international tax. Bill will discuss BEPS 1.0, the highly-anticipated changes from BEPS 2.0 and other international tax developments.

Speaker Biography:

William M. Smith, J.D., LL.M. (Taxation), Tax Manager heads the Transfer Pricing Practice at Wipfli LLP, advising clients on the pricing of their intercompany transactions. Bill also leads the Expat/Inpat Tax Practice and advises individual clients on the U.S. international tax implications of their U.S. inbound and outbound situations and transactions where he advises on an array of other international tax issues and on entity formation issues. Bill’s experience includes advising international clients for a Big 4 accounting firm, managing international tax matters for a Fortune 500 company, and addressing international tax issues for a global asset management firm.
